Wood Gasifier Plans: Fema Gasifier
The Fema Gasifier plans are usually the starting point for most gasifier explorers. Why? Because they are free! Do you get what you pay for? Yes. Are we grateful none the less? Yes.
Back in the 80’s the Feds put out these plans. Remarkable considering where the organization has sunken to now. The Fema Gasifier is based on a type of gasifier called the stratified downdraft gasifier. This design requires no air inlet tubes and can be operated with an open top, making it much safer to reload without the risk of noxious gas inhilation.
My experience with this gasifier was mixed. My woodchip filter kept catching on fire and the design is a bit hokey because it was meant to be built from easily available parts in a worst case scenario. It did give me my first gas though and for that I will forever be thankful. Expect tar. I am working on doing a better stratified downdraft gasifier in the Woody plan set as a bonus along with an Imbert design.
