How to Survive an Economic Depression: Self Reliance
What do you do when the money stops flowing and life becomes a matter of mere survival? Cover the basics first:
Food
Shelter
Heat
Power
Transportation
With wood gas we have a cheap (or free) and abundant power source that can give us much needed heat, power, and even transportation. It’s mobile, it makes power when you want it and it’s a powerful tool in your self reliance arsenal. It’s not push button convenient and it probably never will be, but maybe that is what we need… A dose of reality. Life requires work. There are no microwaves in nature.
The recent snow storm that gripped the West really showed me how little you need to survive. But the things that you do need, you need badly. We have so over extended ourselves as a culture that we live in a state of constant faith that the shelves will be stocked, the pumps will be full and our power will be on. When they are not, our pretty little world comes to a stop.
My good friend Scott has a saying that has served him in the hardest times, “If it is to be, its up to me.” Where will this economic malaise take us? I don’t know. But I do know that if we are to survive and thrive it will come from the reserves of courage and ingenuity deep within us.
Not a single day passes that I don’t get a phone call or an email from someone that has woken up to the situation and realizes that gasification is a key component to their very survival. Plant your seeds, drill your well, keep dry and by all means build a gasifier or help others to do the same. It saved Europe during the war and it may save you in the years to come.
Everything in the world runs on trust. Love, Relationships, and Money. When trust in the illusion of the almighty dollar fades, you are left with the thing that was ultimately valuable: Value itself. Money is just a way of talking about value. You don’t need money, you need value. The things that people need to survive are worth more to them than gold.
A meltdown in a shadow economy is a small price to pay if it makes us return to value, self reliance and inner strength. May you emerge stronger.
